Respiratory and Anesthesia Technology Glossary

Hi, my name is Vicgra Tshibambe and I am a student in Respiratory and Anesthesia Technology. I created this glossary to help students like me to understand better medical terms. This glossary is made for medical students who want to learn terms in English.This glossary includes 20 important terms related to airway, oxygen therapy, ventilation, and patient . I chose these words based on what I study in class, and what we spook about often. The definitions come from Google and notebooks. You guy just need to take a deep breath and start learning new terms.

Airway
Noun
The passage that allows air to move into and out of the lungs.
Example: The doctor checked the patient’s airway.

Auscultation
Noun
Auscultation is the act of listening to body sounds, especially the lungs or heart, using a stethoscope.
Example: The therapist performed auscultation to check the patient’s breath sounds.

Bronchodilator
Noun
A medication that relaxes and opens the airways to improve breathing.
Example: He used a bronchodilator during his asthma attack.

Capnography
noun
Capnography is the noninvasive, real-time monitoring of carbon dioxide (CO2) in exhaled breath, displayed as a waveform (capnogram) and a numerical value (EtCO2), providing critical insights into a patient's ventilation, circulation (perfusion), and metabolism, essential in anesthesia, emergency care, and critical care for verifying intubation, assessing respiratory status, and guiding CPR.
Example: We used capnography to monitor the patient’s CO₂ during surgery.

Exhale
verb
To breathe air out of the lungs.
Example: The patient exhales after holding their breath.

Humidifier
Noun
A device that adds moisture to oxygen or air to prevent airway dryness.
Example: The humidifier keeps the oxygen moist for the patient.

Intubate
verb
To insert a tube into the airway to help a patient breathe.
Example: The doctor intubated the patient during the emergency.

Metered- Dose inhaler
noun
A metered-dose inhaler (MDI) is a handheld medical device that delivers a measured, fixed amount of medication in aerosol form directly into the lungs when you press it and inhale.
Example: He took two puffs from his metered-dose inhaler to relieve his asthma.

Monitor
verb
To observe and check a patient’s condition regularly.
Example: We monitor the oxygen saturation continuously.

Nebulizer
noun
A nebulizer is a medical device that converts liquid medication into a fine mist (aerosol) for direct inhalation into the lungs through a mouthpiece or mask.
Example: The nurse used the nebulizer on Mr. Barnett.

Oxygen
Noun
A gas essential for breathing and life, used in medical therapy.
Example: The patient received oxygen through a nasal cannula.

Adjective
Relating to the lungs.

Respimat
noun
The Respimat is a soft mist inhaler that delivers medication as a fine mist, allowing for slower, deeper inhalation. Essentially, it enhances the absorption of the medication into the lungs.
Example: She used her Respimat to take her medication.

Relating to or affecting respiration or the organs of respiration.
Example: She works in respiratory therapy.

Saturation
Noun
The percentage of oxygen carried in the blood (SpO₂).
Example: Her oxygen saturation was 98%.

Spirometer
noun
An instrument for measuring the air capacity of the lungs.
Example: The patient used a spirometer to test his lung function.

Suction
noun and verb
The removal of mucus or secretions from the airway using negative pressure.
Example: The nurse used suction to clear the patient’s airway.

To inhale
Verb
Breathe in (air, gas, smoke, etc.).
Example: They were taken to the hospital after inhaling fumes

Valved holding chamber
noun
A valved holding chamber (VHC) is a specialized spacer device used with a pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) to improve medication delivery to the lungs.
Example: We use the valved holding chamber to ensure the patient inhales the medication well.

verb
To assist or provide breathing using air or oxygen.
Example: The therapist ventilated the patient with a mask.

Hello, my name is Vicgra , I am a student at the Cégep of Sherbrooke. I am in the respiratory therapy program. This program is about helping patients breathe. We learn about oxygenation, how the equipment works, and ventilation, for example. We give oxygen treatments to patients and we monitor them. So we follow up with patients and their monitoring and everything.We also help clear the airways when they are blocked or compressed by secretions or during an asthma attack, for example. I chose this program because I have always dreamed of working in hospitals. I was hesitating between nursing and this or other programs, but I chose this one because it seemed more complex. The name also seemed more rare and less known, so I told myself that not many people know about it.
